The number of nurses on hospital wards has been rising for years, but the trend is most pronounced among the nursing homes and hospices, where the number of workers has grown.
The nursing home and hospice workforce grew by 9.3 percent in 2017, while the nursing home workforce grew 3.5 percent.
Hospitals and nursing homes in the U.S. have also experienced a surge in demand, as the number and type of patients increased.
For the first time since 2009, the number in U.K. hospitals has grown for the first five months of 2017, according to figures from the National Hospitals Association.
In 2016, nursing home staff had an average of more than 10,000 patients, and the number rose to about 13,000 last year.
The increase in demand is expected to continue, as there are more and more people who need care.
